Okay fellas, a little help if you could . . .
I got my quail lease again this year but have it up through Spring Turkey season this time. It allows me to hunt varmints and small game as well. The lease is small (75 acres) but plenty of game and is located near San Angelo. It is primarily thick stuff and cactus but has about a 15 acre field in it.
I have always wanted to hunt bobcat, so I would like a few pointers for hunting them on my lease this year. I have never hunted them and have never seen one while hunting. I'm looking to try it out but have some questions --
1. When would be the best time to try for a bobcat? I'll have access from Jan through mid-May. If Jan or Feb is better, would hunting them likely disrupt the quail hunting much? As you know, bird numbers are low this year, and if calling bobcats in would bring some from far enough away that they otherwise would not frequent the property, then I ought to consider it and maybe wait until after February.
2. What kind of call do you recommend? I want something that it is both simple and affordable. Any tips on using a call effectively? Will the call likely bring in coyotes, fox, or other critters as well?
3. What kind of light do you use and how do you use it?
4. I just bought a 16' ladder stand that holds two people -- would this be a good way to go? And would you recommend I hunt in the field rather than the thicker cover?
5. Any other helpful suggestions you can provide or things I should know?
I know these are the most basic questions but I have never hunted predators before. Keep trying to shoot coyotes at my dad's place but that has been more of a "if I see 'em" approach -- no calling them in. I'm interested in a variety of predators but especially bobcats. And foxes. Thanks in advance!
