HELP

Okay fellas, a little help if you could . . .

I got my quail lease again this year but have it up through Spring Turkey season this time.  It allows me to hunt varmints and small game as well.  The lease is small (75 acres) but plenty of game and is located near San Angelo.  It is primarily thick stuff and cactus but has about a 15 acre field in it.

I have always wanted to hunt bobcat, so I would like a few pointers for hunting them on my lease this year.  I have never hunted them and have never seen one while hunting.  I'm looking to try it out but have some questions --

  1.  When would be the best time to try for a bobcat?  I'll have access from Jan through mid-May.  If Jan or Feb is better, would hunting them likely disrupt the quail hunting much?  As you know, bird numbers are low this year, and if calling bobcats in would bring some from far enough away that they otherwise would not frequent the property, then I ought to consider it and maybe wait until after February.

  2.   What kind of call do you recommend?  I want something that it is both simple and affordable.  Any tips on using a call effectively?  Will the call likely bring in coyotes, fox, or other critters as well?

  3.   What kind of light do you use and how do you use it?

  4.   I just bought a 16' ladder stand that holds two people -- would this be a good way to go?  And would you recommend I hunt in the field rather than the thicker cover?

  5.   Any other helpful suggestions you can provide or things I should know?

I know these are the most basic questions but I have never hunted predators before.  Keep trying to shoot coyotes at my dad's place but that has been more of a "if I see 'em" approach -- no calling them in.  I'm interested in a variety of predators but especially bobcats.  And foxes.  Thanks in advance!

Let's plan something, Don.  I'll call or email you soon -- that would be a good time.

have you ever heard a rabbit in distress call? thats what i use and have called coyotes in as close as 20 yards and bobcats in as close as 10 yards. Also, you can call bobcats in repeatedly but coyotes will usually not come back for a second chance

I have always been told hunt near water, at night, with a call, and red lights work best.  I have two, one was getting a drink, and the other was going to get a drink.  Needless to say he never made it.

If you guys want to put something together we have seen lots of bobcats on or current lease.  I just never have tried going out for just cats, and we have no coyotes.

I use a yellow headed woodpecker call, works great on most all predators, have a great hunt.

Hornsfan -- what kind of hunt could you put together?  Where would it be located?  Sounds like fun, especially if there are no yotes but lots of cats.

My lease has no real water source, but there must be water somewhere nearby because it has plenty of game on it.  Don't have a clue as to my chances, but I'd like to try for a bobcat this year.

It's about 5 hrs from Austin w/ stops.  If you bow hunt we have Javelina's as well.  We might be able to put somthing together for the Turkey season.

I'm no expert but I have been lucky enough to kill more bobcats than I can count.  Although there is no sure fire plan here's how me and a buddy hunt cats.  1.  Nights is the best but overlook early mornings.  2.  My opinion bird distress calls work better for cats.  3.  Call quietly at first and then increase volume as you go.  I call in 5 minutes sessions.  4.  Once you turn on the red spot light never turn it off again.  Even if you see nothing.  Constantly move it back and forth.  5.  If you see eyes only use the lower halo of the light until you are ready to shoot.  6.  If your just hunting cats then you will have to let the coyotes go.  They will show up a lot faster than cats will.  7.  Be perpared for a long set.  We usually sit between 30 minutes and a hour if we are strictly cat hunting.  8.  Get elevated and hunt either creek bottoms or the thickest cover you can find.  Just make sure you have a shooting lane somewhere.   Maybe some of this can help you out.

Good luck,

Nelson
