i just acquired 6 pigeons and was needing some tips as how to use them for training my labs. i would like them to stay put until we flush them, somewhat like pheasants and/or quail. any info is appreciated.

Spin them by the feet in a big circle to make them dizzy. Tuck the head under a wing, and set in some brush.

They will sit until dogs get there. You can also get spring loaded traps that will launch them.

Keep yer eyes peeled!

Pigeons are great to train with and flush strong.  You can dizzy them, put them under a kick cage, or even hood them with a black baby sock attached to a long string (pull the string to remove the hood).

You can also card them so as to reuse the birds, but avoid carding near trees as they often get tangled.  Basically you attach cords to the legs and then tie on a piece of cardboard that creates resistance during flight.  Birds will be off balance and tire quickly after a 50-100 yard flight, then you can get close and step on the card to retrieve the bird.  Some folks use a length of hose instead of cardboard.  FWIW

thanks for the info txtrigger, so far they have stayed put with nothing attached. it sure does work good, you just have to give them enough time to get there bearings straight, i gave them about 10 min. and my lab caught one. he brought it to me and then it only flew about 15 ft. he caught it again, broght it again, so i leashed him, walked him away and gave it about 5 min. and my lab went right to it and it flushed well. hard lesson learned.

Yeah, you want to try and not dizzy them too much or plant them in too thick of cover (where they won't be able to get up if the dog comes in on them).

Oh, and avoid this method with quail -- I have had the large majority of pen-raised quail fail to flush.  If the dog repeatedly catches the bird, it can create some real problems (at least for those of us with pointing dogs).

Hey Ricky also after you dizzy them don't set them down next to you because you don't want the dog to pick-up human sent around the bird throw the bird 5 or 10 feet away from you and always try to plant from the downwind side. I know it sounds stupid but Ive seen alot of dogs track the bird planters in field. good luck.& happy training  Phil
