I hunt public land, but normally I have to drive a couple of hours. Check out tpwd and see if it is worth getting the permit.

I also hunt public land and recomend the Chapparal Wildlife managemnt area as part of the TPWD hunting program.  They have free hog hunting by phone reservationa and excellent quail hunting.  There are also so public hunting units in the valley and along the gulf coast that allow for Hog / Javelina hunting plus excellent dove and qauil hunting.
