When starting your bobwhite quail hunting trip, stop and enjoy the sounds of nature. Ok, really you need to stop and listen for the bobwhite quail. A quail call can also be used to locate the birds before you head into the brush. Food sources are a prime place to hunt for bobwhite quail.
A hunter familiar with his or her hunting area should target agricultural plots or natural food sources. If all else fails, hunt for bobwhite quail by going right down brushy fencerows. The best time to hunt bobwhite quail is usually late afternoon.
If possible, hit brushy areas between agricultural plots hard, especially the edges. These areas provide cover and easy access to food for the bobwhite quail. If you are hunting without a dog the hunt should stop when you shoot one bird, regardless of the presence of other shots. Fido can find a downed bird without much trouble but you need to get over to it before it becomes lost. If you flush out a covey that you don't see land, give them a minute or so and hit your quail call to find their new location.
Be ready to shoot.
Shoot at individual birds, not into coveys. Not only is this more sporting as you won't wound birds, it is more effective at getting birds into your bag. If you flush only a few bobwhite quail don't give up. Coveys won't always flush together. Move forward to the sight of the flush and be ready.
