Hunted quail there a couple of years ago.  I believe they have a river bottom running through the middle of the WMA.  If hunting quail I would hunt along that, or try and cover as much land as possible.  If you hunt higher up from the river bottom you can get into some steeper terrain.  I know earlier on in the season there is a lot of hunting pressure on the quail.  Not many hunters when we went but the quail got spooked easily.

The Pease River does run through Matador. The river seems to attract a lot of sand burs. LOTS of sand burs. I boot the dogs up when i hunt there. They learn quick to avoid cactus but when you get into a mess of burrs they're stuck everywhere. Weekends you may see a few hunters but with 28,000 acres i hunt in solitude. I carry a compass and hunt between the roads from one windmill to the next. I've yet to bump into another hunter away from the roads. I'm starting to think a lot of hunting gets done driving from one spot to another. Quail are scattered throughout. I read somewhere that "Quail like to be able to put there feet on the ground" so i avoid the heavy, thick grass cover and just wander following my dogs.  I like the rolling Mesquite thickets and avoid the mean up and down terrain. I plan on spending the 24th and 25th there listening to the coyotes sing and feeling humble under the starry sky and if iI manage to stumble across a covey or two so much the better.
