Opinions on pen-raised Pheasant.

I'm know quite a few hunting guides in the Texas panhandle that almost guide exclusively over pen-raised pheasant to improve probability of success for their clients. These aren't near the size or quality of the wild birds, but it keeps the clients coming. Any thoughts on this? I've never hunted the pen-raised birds myself on buddy-hunts, but I have helped put the birds out at 4 am by spinning them(and myself) around till I can't even see straight and setting them in the field (they just lie there and are usually around the same spot during shooting time) or even putting them under a bucket (guide walks up on bucked, kicks bucket and screams rooster). The guides themselves seem kinda hurt doing it, but they see this as a way of preserving their wild birds, as do I. Thoughts?

I live on a farm and we raise pheasants. I have went and shot farm raised pheasants I didn't typically enjoy it cause I knew they were tame. The thing I didn't like is these people took mallards and fed them in a pond everyday at the same time. They would get clients to set up on this pond before dark and just at light someone down the creek would let them out of the pen, they would fly right to their feeding pond and get smoked. I thought this was piss poor lazy rich boy hunting!

HAPPY

Howdy! Seems like I have read that some other states do the same thing. There are many game bird farms here in Texas where you can hunt pen-raised pheasant, quail, and chukars. Whether or not pen-raised pheasants can legally be mixed into a wild population of pheasants in Texas, I do not know and is a question that TPWD could better answer. On the other hand, pen-raised birds usually do not live long in the wild. I have hunted pen-raised pheasants once and had a great time! A good topic of conversation that others should share their views as well!  Take care!
