TURKEY

Howdy! The only thing listed for Rio Grande Turkeys in the Annual Public Hunt manual is a Fall season in San Angelo. However, there are other places not listed in the APH manual that may offer Spring and Fall turkey hunt opportunities. I would call Texas Parks and Wildlife and get some information. Best of Luck!

Always,

Gene

I am doing some research on that as we speak. I havent found much in the way of turkey hunting rios on public land but if there is some to be found I will find it and get back with you. I want to take my Grand Slam on all public land. Florida is even harder to find such places. I will get it done though.

LBJ Grasslands for your Rio and Caddo Grasslands for your Eastern would be your two closest. Expect company. Consider it competition turkey hunting.

Caddo was pretty scarce when i was up there for deer season. Does LBJ attract more than Caddo?

Yea i think I'll give it one more shot the last week of the season. Did you check out any of those areas I mentioned to you? The birds usually respond better opening weekend and the last week or two of the season. This late in the seasonI've found it's easier to call them in later in the afternoon. Those hot gobblers will be looking for hens before they fly up to the roost, and by this time most hens are on the nest. Only thing is they've been called to so much all season long they'll get suspicious if you call too much or too loud. If they're close you calljust enough fir them to hear you and sorta tease them a bit...let them come looking for you. I've only hunted up there the last four years but learned a lot through trial and error.
