BIRD

Hey guys, does anyone know of some decent public quail hunting in the state?  Anywhere?  I live in Houston the closer the better, but I have a truck and know how to use it.

Good luck. Quail are way down everywhere. We feed them and don't hunt them (although we can) because there are so few. Last year saw only 2-3 covies. We are in Crockett county, used to be wonderfull quail hunting not now. We have been doing some varment hunting and have discovered a real problem. Not so many wild varments, BUT we have a large amount of farel house cats. They will turn a covey of quail into nothing very fast, so if you see one on your place---TAKE HIM OUT !!!!

I stopped by a quail farm on I10 and bought some quail to eat.It was a busy place and I asked the man "who is buying all these birds, restaraunts or something"?He laughed and said "no all these outfitters come in here and buy hundreds of quail the day before a hunt and release them"!!!Hunters report their excellent  harvest info to the state.Thats a problem,I wonder if these chicken coop birds might be spreading disease to native wild quail.

If I had the money and a place I would buy numbers of quail to release, also I would cut down on the predators in the area.  I have always heard that Feral house Cats are one of the biggest predators of Quail but I am not sure if its true.

I live in Cameron County and hunted all of the public Los Palmos land tract theispast two weekends.  I found only one covey of about 10 birds on one of the tracts and it was connected to a tilled under corn field.  The other lands were surrounded by sugar cane and cabbage.  The habitat looks good but the birds are not there.  I personally believe the birds move to farms and land with good feed crops like corn, wheat, sorgum etc.  when they covey up in the fall or they are being baited.

I used to have a cat that would bring quail home when I was a kid-so maybe they are a big problem, not mention all the other predators.  One the worst things we can do is stock pen raised birds.  They will introduce disease, weaker genes and survival instincts. Survival of the fittest will produce the best birds.  I am from NC and the one factor that is working there is habitat improvement.
