For 13-year-old Trey Balzen, the best part of a field trip is the chance to get out of the classroom for a day, according to KSAT-TV in San Antonio.
"It's a lot better, because you actually do hands-on stuff. You can walk around," he said. "Otherwise, I'd just be sitting in a classroom, doing a worksheet -- which is boring -- and waiting for the next class."
Balzen was one of about 100 seventh-grade students from Jordan Middle School in San Antonio who were treated to a field investigation day at Spring Creek Ranch in Boerne, courtesy of ranch owner and TWA Director Steve C. Lewis and the Texas Wildlife Association.
Students had the chance to use GPS and radio telemetry to see how it's used by scientists to track bobwhite quail. Some of the topics included Quail CSI, examining nests and scent stations, as well as learning the importance of ground cover to increase water quality and quantity and to prevent erosion.
