I am thinking in this case a decoy really helps out.  Instead of the gobbler just looking for a "sound" he will see something he can start chasing.

Allen,

Nice idea, but it has been my experience that not much will pull a solitary gobbler from his hens.

Best thing that has worked for me over the years, is make as much noise as you can, cutt, cackle and in general listen to and talk to the hens. When you hear a single hen start to answer, cut her off with a cutt or cackle. You will basiscally challenge the dominate hen and hopefully call her and the rest of the hens to you and who follows but the tom.

You must be patient, this could take awhile. Other times they just all break and come running to you, ready for a cat fight.

This works with or without a decoy.

I had problems with gobblers all last season.  They just didn't want to come in for any number of reasons.  I think last year that the season may have started a little too late.

I tried a variety of different ways to bring them in.  Different calls, different cadences.  Finally got one to come in by going back to basics - just using the box call with a simple 'hen put' over a 45 minute period.  I also used a gobbler shaker to some success as I was able to get a hen to come in - a call rarely can get a gobbler to respond over the real thing especially if they are hung up with a hen.

We did get a gobbler to come in with a hen and smaller gobbler, but I think that was more luck than skill.  We called that rascal for over an hour - he would answer but wouldn't come up the hill from Coletto Creek. All three of them finally came up after we had picked our decoys up and were standing next to a fence  talking about how the big birds weren't responding to us- our guns were also leaning up against the fence.  My buddy took a 40 yard shot that caused all three to hightail it out of there.  I took a shot at the gobbler as he was flying off and knocked big limb out of a mesquite tree.....  Just one of those days I guess.

Just don't lose patience and keep doing what you think is right.  Sooner or later it will work.  Turkeys will always make you talk to yourself.....
