I used to hunt LBJ National Grasslands. It's not too far, I used to do it in about an hour and I lived further south than you do. Lots of acres and you can run across about anything there. Quail and rabbits for sure (the quail can be a little hard to find) as well as deer, hogs, turkey, woodcock, etc. Talk to the rangers, they're pretty helpful.

Go north on 35 to Denton, then west on 380 to Decatur. Turn north on 287 and stop at the Grasslands headquarters office on the right. They've got a Grassland's map for about $6 which you'll need. The Grasslands property is interspersed with private property and none of the roads run straight. You'll find blocks on both sides of 287. Try the block with the archery range, I've had fair luck there.
