Free Range Aoudad!

My husband offered to start taking me hunting just about two years ago - kids now grown and gone...I've taken Elk, Deer, Antelope, Javalinas but the most awesome hunt to date was a Free Range Aoudad hunt in our home territory - the Davis Mountains of West Texas.

The vast country is just wonderful to ride around in - we saw so much wildlife - mule deer, javalinas, quail, antelope - and after two days, I took my ram, shooting over a canyon, making a good clean 548 yard shot with my 270 WSM!

The free-range Aoudad hunting in West Texas is one of Texas' best kept secrets and a hunt that way exceeded my expectations...glassing, stalking and trying to get close to this big guys before they effortlessly hop rock to rock and out of sight over the mountaintops!  My ram measured at 29" - respectable enough to be proud of, but the hunt and the challenge and the success of the shot was definitely the highlight!

Oh, you have to come hunt in the mountains of Texas!  So many don't know what this part of Texas is like!

I did hunt with a guide - he is retired border patrol and has hunted this area for years.  This is all private ranch country and the ranchers won't let just anyone access the property.

I'll be glad to pass on the info to you - not sure what this forum's rules are...can I post the info here, or would it be best to email you contact info.  It is a reasonable priced hunt and I guarantee you'll have a great hunt!

I'm looking forward to hunting antelope and mule deer with this same guide - he has approx 500,000 of open ranch land to access.  We went out this last week and checked out the antelope - have had such good rains out here the last two years, the antelope are in great shape...I'm hooked on hunting now for sure -   My husband has created a monster - heheee!

Thanks for posting about your hunt, Kathy and welcome to the board. I'd like to hear more about the antelope hunt possibilities if you have the time. Will you please post the guide's name. thanks

Sorry been out of touch for a few days - and thanks for the welcome.

I went hunting for my aoudad (and will return for antelope and mule deer) with Wayne Weimers of Marfa, Texas.  He has been guiding for about 12 years and has access to great private ranches.  As you might know, it is extremely difficult to gain access to private ranches out here in West Texas, but Wayne has built a great relationship with the ranch owners.  He mainly advertises by word of mouth.  Give him a call at 432-729-3308, home phone.  Tell him Kathy sent you!

He has a few antelope permits available - season begins October 2 and the last I talked to him he had two mule deer permits.  Aoudad are year round.

Hey, jim b - a turkey hunter?  I just completed my World Slam - 55 days - this spring...and I got hooked on turkey hunting big time!  Heck, I'm hooked on any hunting big time!

Great story Kathy, got any pics?

548 yds sounds like a great shot, I know they are tough animals to put down.  I can't even see 500yds let alone make a shot.

congrats again

thanks for the information, Kathy. Yep, I do like to turkey hunt, although I spend a fair amount of time cussing during the spring season when they don't what they're supposed to do.
