I'm seriously considering a trip to Lake Meredith this year. I just got off the phone and a map with guidelines is on the way. Can anyone give me tips/hints/guidelines/ideas/comments/suggestions/feedback/anything about this place? I'd like to park my truck and take utility vehicle futher in but I'm not sure they allow it. How big is this place? How many deer are there? Are there any hogs? Can you hunt year around? It's going to be a serious drive and I wonder if the wildlife refuge by Paducah would be better.
If you would rather email me where I can shoot the big one -- allen@texashuntfish.com :)

Allen, I have never hunted there. But I have hunted close to that area. The deer are large in that area. Rough country. I do not know if they will allow 4 wheelers, but one would be helpful. As far as Matador WMA. I hear good things about it. Although it will be by drawing only. If you get on, Good luck.
I work, So I can hunt.

I guess they had too many people hunting Matador? I want to go to Meredith but I'm not sure if bow season would be better or rifle.

I just found this about Meredith:
"OFF-ROAD VEHICLE USE AREAS: only two portions of the recreation area are open to all-terrain vehciles; (1) within the cutbanks of Blue Creek and (2) Rosita Flats, below 3000 ft elevation. The Rosita area consists of the Canadian River bed east of the Dumas Bridge to Chicken Creek. All vehicles are prohibited past the mouth of Chicken Creek. Tin-cup Canyon is closed to all vehicles. Motorcycles, three-and four-wheelers, dune buggies are prohibited in all other areas within the recreation area. "
Guess I'll need to locate Chick Creek now :)

I'm gonna be at Lake Meredith with you from Nov. 19th thru 22nd then back for Thanksgiving. Then off to whitetail or duck hunt the weekend after Thanksgiving. I'm excited, I have always wanted to hunt Muledeer and its finally going to happen. We all need to get together and camp in the same location.
No ATV's in the hunting areas so it will be carry or drag to the nearest road. Can you drive off road in a four wheel drive truck?

Allen, to answer some of you questions...ATVs in designated areas only. The area is 45,000 acres total but I think that includes the lake. The lake is the best Walleye lake in Texas. The Duck and Goose hunting is supposed to be awesome. There should be some quail and pheasant on the area. It should be a great trip but I think the rifle season with the cooler temps and available bird and waterfoul hunting would be better and nicer for camping purposes. I saw nothing about hogs but it is the only public Muledeer hunting in Texas. I suggest a good pair of binos or a spotting scope if you have it for spot and stalk hunting. Lets go get em!

Is anyone interested in going in October? I'm still game for November but I'm thinking about Oct as well to scout and bow hunt with the light pressure.

Garrett - I'm getting pumped for this trip. I decided not to go in Oct and save it all for Nov. Do you know a good place to order a topo map for this hunt? I'm also considering a GPS but not sure if I can afford one right now. It sure would help in that kind of country.
