HAPPY

Hey Guys,

I'm trying to find a place down here in South Texas, around Starr/Hildago/Cameron counties to go after some Chachalaca. Whether it'd be lease, guided, un-guided, day hunt, whatever, doesn't matter to me. I've found a few promising leads here but haven't heard anything back as of yet. So if anyone knows somebody, or knows someone that knows someone, I'd sure appreciate any info. I have even went as far as to place ads in local newspapers down there before last season but never heard anything.

Thanks,

Eric

Pic info:

And here is one and only one I've been able to get over the years. I mounted him, going up after some casted oranges like you see in almost every picture from birders going and feeding them at the parks.

Just to vent a few frustrations I'm beginning to run into after getting into trying to find a spot so far for the year. And I ran into this over the years trying to track something down. Why is it that people in the valley believe that this bird cannot be hunted? I've heard anywhere from their endangered, "aren't they the Texas state bird", to their just protected. And trying to calmly explain to people that if they would simply pick up the Texas hunting regs for the past 15 years, the season has always been there, has always been 5 per day, for give or take the same duration of the season. I took out a few more ads down there, and man I can't wait to see what I'm gonna hear next!

Howdy! Eric:  Get an Annual Public Hunt permit this year. There are several places listed in Cameron and Hidalgo counties for Chachalaca. Enjoy some quail hunting also!  Hope this helps!

Always, Gene

Hey Gene,

I've been down that road a many of years. For about 4 years my brother and I would drive down from north of Dallas to every single one of the places listed on the annual hunting permit and never saw, heard, and seen signs of the birds being there.

I'm hoping the ads pay off but who knows. Thing about Chachalaca is going into a place looking for them is much different than lucking out and finding someone who knows a much more narrowed down area of where he/she sees them frequently. I'm not saying that a person couldn't go down there and get into one or two, but I've never heard of it from the who knows how many people I've talked to now about those birds.

But will makes some calls to some of the areas and see about the quail.

Thanks,

Eric
