BIRD

Does anyone know of a good public quail hunting area?  Im training a pup this year and would really like to get her on some wild birds as much as possible.  Since I'm new to TX I've noticed most of the hunting is on private lands.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Howdy! There are a few public land areas in the Panhandle along with West and South Texas that offer quail hunting. Matador WMA in Cottle county is one area and several more. However, some WMA in Texas will say they offer quail hunting, but you would be hard pressed to find one quail. I would contact the wildlife biologist for the area you want to hunt and get advice. The quail population seems to go up and down depending on the rain and other habitat issues. You will need to get an APH permit along with your hunting license to use most of the public hunt areas. Good LUck!  Always, Gene

thanks for the info. I appreciate the tip.  I will look into it and hopefully find a decent place to hunt.

Check out Chapparal WMA and the Las Palomas units in the Valley hold alot of quail also!!!
